Current-carrying ground states in mesoscopic and macroscopic systems.

چکیده
I extend a theorem of Bloch, which concerns the net orbital current carried by an interacting electron system in equilibrium, to include mesoscopic effects. I obtain a rigorous upper bound to the allowed ground-state current in a ring or disk, for an interacting electron system in the presence of static but otherwise arbitrary electric and magnetic fields. I also investigate the effects of spin-orbit and current-current interactions on the upper bound. Current-current interactions, caused by the magnetic field produced at a point r by a moving electron at r8, are found to reduce the upper bound in a thin uniform ring by an amount that is determined by the self-inductance of the system. The upper bound is also compared with recent measurements of the persistent current in a single ring.

Vortex phase separation in mesoscopic superconductors
We demonstrate that in mesoscopic type II superconductors with the lateral size commensurate with London penetration depth, the ground state of vortices pinned by homogeneously distributed columnar defects can form a hierarchical nested domain structure. Each domain is characterized by an average number of vortices trapped at a single pinning site within a given domain. Our study marks a radica...
متن کاملInstanton Induced Tunneling Amplitude at Excited States with the Lsz Method
Quantum tunneling between degenerate ground states through the central barrier of a potential is extended to excited states with the instanton method. This extension is achieved with the help of an LSZ reduction technique as in field theory and may be of importance in the study of macroscopic quantum phenomena in magnetic systems. Quantum effects on the macroscopic scale have attracted consider...

The main focus of this area of research is the development of criteria for mesoscopic and macroscopic entanglement and their application to both continuous variable and discrete (spin) measurements on squeezed Gaussian states and macroscopic Bell states respectively. This involves several types of investigation. At the fundamental level, we are developing new EPR, Bell and GHZ related classical...
متن کاملBallistic Four-Terminal Josephson Junction: Bistable States and Magnetic Flux Transfer
The macroscopic quantum interference effects in ballistic Josephson microstructures are investigated. The studied system consists of four bulk superconductors (terminals) which are weakly coupled through the mesoscopic rectangular normal metal (two dimensional electron gas). We show that nonlocal electrodynamics of ballistic systems leads to specific current-phase relations for the mesoscopic m...
